What made you decide to lose weight? Was there a moment or experience that "lit the fire" for you?
After looking over some pictures from previous vacations, I realized I looked terrible after gaining over 40 pounds over the last 6 years. The additional weight made me look older than I feel. So I decided to start working out again doing cardio intervals, kettle bells and strength training. I made some progress but very slowly. I realized I had to make a change to my diet and alcohol consumption. I was familiar with the carb reduction so I looked for an app to assist me in counting and tracking my carb intake. Fortunately I found the Carb Manager app. During the first week of using the app every day I saw immediate results in moving the weight scale. I also felt great by the end of the week, not starving and steady energy level. I did further research on the internet regarding carb management and fully understand how important it is to try to get my body into a ketogenic state to turn my body into a fat burning machine. I would not be able to do so without the Carb Manager. It is a powerful and awesome tool that helps me to manager my carb intake while at the same time not completely deprive myself of some of the things I enjoy eating and drinking. It's all about managing at the appropriate level that supports my diet goals and/or weight goals. My body fat has dropped from 34% to 24% as of yesterday. I feel very confidently that I will be able to get down to 150 pounds and at about 15% body fat by mid July of this year (2016). My confidence is due to the Carb Manager app and my consistent cardio & strength workouts which I look forward to everyday. I have told many of my friends and family about the Carb Manager app when they compliment me on my quick weight loss. I am very grateful of the hard work and creativity the Carb Manager app staff has put into this great app! You guys are awesome!
Have you tried any other weight loss plans (low fat, low calorie, or other) in the past? How did they work out?
I have tried the low calorie approach using my FitBit app. I purchased an HR FitBit in 2015. It works well however I only dropped about 4-5 pounds using the calorie counter in FitBit during a 3-4 month period. I was doing about the same type and durations of workouts as I am currently but it seemed like I was barely moving the scale. It was very discouraging because I did not want to cut my calories to a point where I would feel hungry all day. Once I introduced the Carb Manager app approach into my diet I lost about 5 pounds in the first week. This made an immediate believer out of me regarding the importance to manager my carbs at the gram levels every day. It was great to melt the body fat so quickly and not feel deprived of any of my favorite foods.
Tell us about your weight loss experience. How did you change your diet and lifestyle? How did this affect your life (health, well-being, attitude, energy)?
I don't feel like I have made huge changes in my diet other than the carb intake management. From my perspective its all about managing the proper levels of carbs, fats and protein. For example, I eat In-N-Out burgers about every other week but do so protein style or with only one bun, depending on what carbs I have consumed on that given day. About the only big change is that I have minimized my alcohol consumption due to the high carbs in most alcohol. Occasionally I still enjoy an ice cold bud light beer with a shot of Patron Silver tequila. lol .. But this is only about once or twice a month. Since losing the weight I have enjoyed shopping for new and fashionable shirts and shorts. My waist has gone from a size 38 to a size 32 and my shirts from an XL to a Medium. I feel great and believe I look much younger and healthier. My energy level is very high due to the change in diet and the interval cardio training with kettle bells.
How did Carb Manager help you stay on track? Which features did you find the most useful?
Carb Manager allows me to quickly log or capture what I'm consuming throughout the day and to track at the gram level my carb intake along with the calories for the day. I try to stay within only 40-50 grams of carbs everyday and within 1,400 - 1,600 calories. On the days I consume more carbs or calories I will consider or reflect why I did so and how I can avoid repeating this in the future. I don't "beat myself up" over any days in which I miss my target. I keep in mind to allow myself to be human and enjoy life but at the same time try to keep an eye on my health goals.
What was the most difficult part of losing weight? What techniques did you use to overcome these challenges? What kept you motivated?
The most difficult part was when I was only counting calories. I lost only a few pounds and felt like I had made very little progress after working hard a few months. This was very discouraging and I almost believed the lie that perhaps this is how it should be due to my being in my late 40's. Now I know this is pure bullshit and that with the correct approach, tools, and work I can be very successful.
What do you see as the greatest benefits of going low carb?
I believe that by going low carb my body is in a state that when I do some daily and deliberate movement (exercise / workout) I will force my body to use body fat for energy. This results in body weight reduction and most important, a drop in body fat %. I'm experiencing this thanks to Carb Manager which allows me to manage and track my carb intake everyday.
What's the best thing about being at your new weight?
I'm fitting in cloth sizes from my late twenties. Love how I look in my new cloth. Guess I'm a little vain.
What are your health & fitness goals going forward?
I want to drop to 150 pounds and 15% body fat before mid July. This means losing about another 20 pounds and about 9% body fat within 60 days.
We'd love it if you could provide a few tips for others just beginning their low carb lifestyle.
Manage your grams of carbs within a range and do some movement (walking, working out, housework) every day. Remember carbs are not the enemy, but if manage at a proper level daily anyone can drop body fat over a reasonable time.
